How I survived 5 weeks walking the Camino de Santiago (with no money!)

Hey Reader!

What’s the craziest, most physically demanding travel adventure you’ve ever experienced?

Mine would have to be walking the Camino de Santiago in northern Spain. I decided to walk the camino at the end of a tiring 8 months of solo travelling around the world. But I really underestimated how exhausting the camino would be.

Read my blog post: Best Time To Walk Camino de Santiago (& The Worst!)

I was down to my very last few hundred euros and I knew that stretching that amount to last me throughout the entirety of the camino would be a tall ask.

I could barely afford a decent meal and some days all I had to eat were biscuits and chocolate bars. Despite my financial troubles, the camino remains probably my favourite travel adventure I’ve ever been on.

I witnessed the running of the balls at the San Fermin festival in Pamplona. I slept in the most amazing monasteries and under the stars of the milky way. I partied with people from all corners of the world. I even fell in and out of love with a crazy Spanish girl; Zara, who suffered from narcolepsy and would fall asleep at random times during our walks.

Each day in the blazing heat I’d walk around twenty to thirty kilometres; just me and my thoughts and the Spanish horizon. It gave me plenty of time to think and reflect and meditate on what I had come from and where I wanted to go.

It’s easy to romanticise the Camino, but there is something special about walking it and learning what you’re truly capable of. It tests you to your limits but rewards you in unexpected ways.

I met a French pilgrim by the name of David who professed to me how the Camino can change your life, and because you are walking under the Milky Way this heightens your ability of manifestation.

You’re thinking about money? Then money will manifest ten minutes later further down the road.

You’re looking for love in your life? Then who knows who you might meet on the Camino. It was an interesting theory.

I met one pilgrim; Raphael from Germany who had a chiselled face and body like a Greek God, who had suddenly decided one day to cut up his credit card and walk the rest of the Camino with no money.

He wanted to put David’s manifestation theory to the test, and the results were astonishing. Every morning he would ask a shop owner for some hot water to go with his cup of mint leaves and restaurant owners would offer him free food, such pity they had for his plight.

By the end of the Camino he was eating bigger meals than I was! 😂

I discovered that walking the camino was relatively inexpensive, with cheap accommodation and meals, which is why it’s so popular with students.

Hey Reader! Having discussed how easy (or difficult) it is to live abroad in my last email, I wanted to share with you my experience of living in Madrid as an English teacher for a year. Several years ago I landed an English teaching job in the Spanish capital purely by chance. Although the pay wasn’t great and I was working very long hours, I was given free accommodation and was living in one of the most vibrant capital cities in Europe. Hey Reader! Have you ever lived abroad before or is it something you’re seriously considering? During these uncertain times, more and more people are choosing to up sticks and live abroad. Back in 2022 an estimated 471,000 Brits emigrated to other countries, and in 2023 that number rose to 508,000 (according to the Office of National Statistics). Although Brexit has made emigrating to popular European countries such as Spain a more complicated issue (you need to have a considerable income), a...
